Lizzo’s Reaction to Online Criticism: “I’m Out”

Houston Raised Musician, Lizzo Expresses Frustration Over Criticism From Those Close to Her, Hinting at the Possibility of Quitting Music.Taking to Instagram, the artist shared how the overwhelming negativity was making her contemplate whether she belongs in a world that seems unwelcoming. “I’m getting tired of all the criticism I’m facing from everyone around me and online,” she wrote. “All I want is to make music, bring happiness to people, and make the world a bit better than how i found it.”

“But I’m beginning to feel like the world doesn’t want me in it. I’m constantly up against lies being told about me for clout and views… being the butt of the joke every single time because of my appearance.. my character being picked apart by people who don’t know me and disrespecting my name.”She concluded: “I didn’t sign up for this – I QUIT.”

Lizzo posted this message because a judge wouldn’t let her cancel the lawsuit about sexual harassment and discrimination. Last August, people said she was being mean and harassing at a strip club in Amsterdam. Lizzo said those accusations hurt her and weren’t true. More dancers complained about her behavior, and another lawsuit came from a former hairstylist in September. She tried to get rid of this new lawsuit too.

Now, a judge in Los Angeles has ruled that the case will go ahead in its entirety towards a trial. Originally, Lizzo’s lawyers filed to have the lawsuit dismissed totally in September under California’s anti-SLAPP statute (“strategic lawsuits against public participation”). The statue aims to quickly dismiss lawsuits that threaten free speech. Lizzo’s lawyers argued that her backup dancers were trying to “silence” her.

The judge in response ruled that the lawsuit did not fit into anti SLAPP legislation and while he dismissed certain claims that were made by the backup singers including one that alleged that Lizzo had fat shamed a dancer despite years of advocating for body positivity. He ruled that the rest of the case would go forward.

The artist gained global fame in 2019 with her breakthrough song Truth Hurts, but in August last year, she faced allegations made by some former dancers, and who claimed their employer had sexually harassed them and body-shamed them while on tour.

It’s not so clear what Lizzo meant by her statement “I Quit”, whether she means to quit the music industry permanently or if she is just taking a break from the bullying.

Notwithstanding, Lizzo has said that she is working on new music and she added that she felt the magic was back. Sometime in November, Lizzo had previously said that she had also been spending time working on herself and her trust issues with the world.
