In the early 1980s, a 10-year-old from Chicago named Jason Narducy formed a punk band called Verböten with his friends. Despite their young age, the band made a significant impact, even inspiring a young Dave Grohl when he witnessed one of their early rehearsals. Since those formative years, Narducy has carved out a notable career in music. He has led the band Split Single, played as the touring bassist for both Superchunk and Bob Mould, and performed R.E.M. covers alongside actor Michael Shannon. Now, after decades apart, Verböten has reunited, and they are set to release their first-ever full-length album, self-titled Verböten, this Friday.
Ahead of the album release, Verböten has already shared singles like “Bodily Autonomy” and “No More Indecision.” The band recently marked their return to the stage with a performance at Riot Fest, their first show in 41 years. As a final preview of the new album, Verböten has just released a short, high-energy track called “Kicking Away.” The song captures the raw, spirited essence of their early punk roots, as if they were channeling their youthful, 10-year-old selves while bringing the maturity of their adult musicianship. The result is a thrilling, nostalgic burst of punk energy, condensed into a lively two-minute anthem. You can listen to the track below.
