Earlier this year, the jangly British indie rock band World News released an impressive EP titled Escape. Today, they’ve announced plans for a new EP called Mindsnap. While I’ve previously pointed out their less-than-ideal SEO situation, it seems they’re making strides in that area by opting for unique titles like Mindsnap.
Along with the announcement, World News has shared the EP’s title track, which marks a significant departure from their earlier work on Escape. The song “Mindsnap” embraces a darker, gothier sound that stands out from what we’ve heard from them previously. It features a mechanistic, motorik-inspired drumbeat paired with the band’s characteristic sparkling guitars.
Rory Evans, one of the two brothers who write the band’s songs, shared some insights about the creation of “Mindsnap.” He explained that several of the riffs had been lingering for a long time, initially pieced together as an instrumental track. He noted, “I thought it sounded a bit neurotic, which matched where I was in my life at the time. ‘Mindsnap’ was the first word that popped up, and we built the lyrics and themes around it.”
Evans further elaborated on their creative process: “We can sometimes write super unconsciously — we bring ideas to the room, and we don’t talk; we just jam them out. I think it’s just a case of what sounds and feels good and what doesn’t. When we first brought this into the room, we all sort of looked at each other and were like, ‘yep.’” This organic approach to songwriting is evident in the track’s raw energy and innovative sound.
