In this interview, we had the opportunity to explore the world of Master of Mischief, discovering the fun-loving personality and artistic ideas that define his unique style.
Cocomyrrh: Master of Mischief?! I have to ask, what’s the story behind that name?
Master Of Mischief: Well, I’m a very mischievous person so I wanted a name that reflected my playful side, and to also hint that I don’t take myself too seriously and I like to have fun. I also enjoy alliteration because I’m an English nerd.
Cocomyrrh: What sparked your interest in music? Was it something you always wanted to do?
Master Of Mischief: I’ve been into music from an early age, around 7 or 8 when I first started digging through my parents CD and record collection. They aren’t musicians themselves, but they had some decent albums. I found that it really captured my attention and imagination, and I’ve just always been into music ever since. I’ve listened to all sorts – really old, classic stuff like The Beatles and Elvis, then more modern popular artists but crossing all genres, from Oasis to My Chemical Romance. I’ve always been a bit of an emo kid. I started learning instruments when I was around 12 and have wanted to play and create music ever since.
Cocomyrrh: How has your journey as an artist been? Are there any regrets?
Master Of Mischief: I’ve been in loads of bands of varying genres, starting from when I was about 14. I’ve been in a punk band, a covers band, an indie band, and a couple of others. But recently I decided I wanted to pursue something totally different and do my own thing by launching a solo project. I like not having to answer to anyone, and just doing whatever I feel like, musically, creatively and also with the promotion of the records.
I actually don’t believe in regrets, just in life in general. I’m a big ‘everything happens for a reason’ person, so I don’t have any regrets about anything, ever. It’s a very freeing attitude to embrace, if you can.
Cocomyrrh: When did you realize you’ve found your niche or style in music? Was there a particular song or project that signified this for you?
Master Of Mischief: When I first started working on the five songs that make up ‘Tales of the Twisted Prince’, something just clicked within me, because I was having so much fun, and also coming out with things that sounded half decent. I just really loved blending little bits of everything I enjoy and creating something new. I can sometimes be a bit shy about sharing things I’ve created or songs I’ve written. As I mentioned, I’ve been in plenty of bands before but aside from writing the chords to songs I never really put forward my own lyrics or whole, completed songs, because there was a part of me that was worried about rejection or had this self-doubt in my brain. However, with this project, I just really believed in what I was doing and just really loved my own music, to the point where I was like ‘to hell with it’, I’m just going to put stuff out there because I enjoy it, and if other people do too, that’s cool.
Cocomyrrh: Your Ep “Tales of the twisted prince” suggests a narrative. What inspired it?
Master Of Mischief: It does have a narrative, yes. And I don’t mind talking about what it because it doesn’t necessarily change how people interpret the songs. I won’t go too deeply into each individual song, however, because I do like to leave things open too. But it does have a rough narrative. I’ve always enjoyed projects and records that have some sort of narrative or vague concept where you can jump in on the ‘lore’ if you want to, or just enjoy the music by itself if you’re not fussed. ‘Tales of the Twisted Prince’ tells the story of someone who is disenfranchised and dissatisfied with their existence and is searching for something ‘more’. They want excitement, they want thrills, danger perhaps. But because of this restlessness they get tempted down a darker path in life and end up getting themselves in deeper and deeper and in more trouble, finding it’s harder to escape and get back to where they were before. So, on some level it’s about losing yourself, finding yourself, recreating yourself. It’s also about the choices you make and the impact they might have but also embracing new challenges and embracing life without fear. I like to tell the story of the ‘twisted prince’ without passing judgement on him, because everyone can make some dodgy choices sometimes, and at the end of the EP, he looks back over everything and is still pleased by where he is, because every path leads you somewhere, every decision opens another door, when one chapter ends another starts etc. It’s very deep, in a way haha. But also on the surface level, just a load of fun tracks with some edgy sounding lyrics thrown in. People can take it whichever way they want.
Cocomyrrh: What’s your favorite track on your Ep?
Master Of Mischief: I think my favorite is “Entrust To Mistrust”. It was the last track I made for the record, and I wanted something that was upbeat. I wanted a sort of…’happy’ way to end it, and something with a strong synth and melody, but still keeping that ‘edge’. I was pleased with the way it turned out and also particularly pleased with my vocal delivery on that one.
Cocomyrrh: How do you want your audience to feel when they listen to your music particularly this Ep?
Master Of Mischief: If we’re going deep into it, I want them to feel connected, inspired, empowered, to be who they are and to think for themselves and to be unafraid to be what they want and do what they want, without worrying what people will think of them or what society has to say.
Aside from that, I just want them to enjoy the music and be like “ooh, this has a nice beat/hook”.
Cocomyrrh: Are there any upcoming projects you’re working on at the moment? What should we look out for following this Ep?
Master Of Mischief: I already have the idea for the follow up EP. This one is going to be six tracks and the first single for it will be coming out in February 2025. I haven’t made any official announcements on my socials about it yet or done any promo for it as I’m still in the ‘cycle’ of promoting this one, but soon as the new year rolls around, I’m going to start hyping it up and dropping little hints. In some way, it is linked to the ‘twisted prince’ story but told in a different way. I’m also going to be experimenting with adding some more guitar elements to this next record. Guitar is my first instrument, and I’ve come up with some cool riffs and chord progressions recently so I’m going to try and work those in. I’ll be releasing singles throughout 2025 as part of the new EP.
Cocomyrrh: As you look ahead and beyond, what are your hopes and aspirations for your music career?
Master Of Mischief: I’m already having so much fun with it, and I just intend to carry that on for as long as I want to really. As long as I’m still enjoying it and still coming up with interesting tracks and ideas then I’ll keep this going. Hopefully I can continue to grow my audience and develop a bigger fanbase as I go along. It’s still early days with that but I know the more I release, the more it will grow. It’s a marathon, not a race, but I’m in it for the long haul. I’ve already seen some awesome successes and cool milestones with this so I’m excited for what comes next.
