Music has a special way of helping us say the things that are too painful to speak. Sophie Annabel’s new song, An Ode to My Babies is a perfect illustration of this. It’s a sad, beautiful, and honest look at the type of heartbreak many people don’t talk about enough: The loss of a pet.
The song was written after a painful experience during the end of Annabel’s engagement. Without her knowledge or consent, three of her four pets, animals she had raised since birth were rehomed by her former fiancé. At the time, she was actively looking for a pet-friendly apartment so she could keep them with her. Before she had the chance, they were gone. She wasn’t told where they were taken, and she never got to say goodbye. That sudden loss left a deep emotional mark, and “Ode to My Babies” became the only way she could fully process what happened.

An ode to my babies comes from a place of deep, personal pain as these weren’t just animals; Sophie has been with them since the day they were born and had grown a bond with them.
Instead of writing a song filled with anger or blame, she choose to write a Tribute. While betrayal is part of the story, Annabel chooses to focus on love instead. The lyrics show exactly how it feels when someone you trust breaks your heart. She sings: “I just wanna know, Where you are now/ I’m trying really hard to find out, I miss you” These words capture the feeling of searching for something you’ve lost and the frustration of not finding answers. The song reminds us that even though people can change and be unkind, the love we have for our babies stays pure.

The song also recognizes what remains. Annabel still has her chihuahua, Pablo, who misses his sisters too. In many ways, the song feels like it’s for him as much as it is for the pets who are gone. Anyone who has ever loved a pet and knows that they are truly members of the family would understand and feel the vulnerability in this song.
When I listened to An Ode to My Babies, i didn’t just hear a song, i heard a person trying to find peace. It reminded me to hug my pets a little tighter tonight. Sophie has turned tragedy into a beautiful gift for her lost pets and in doing so, she has also given us a song that feels like a warm hug for anyone grieving It’s a brave, touching piece of music for anyone who has ever loved an animal and felt that loss stay with them, this song will feel painfully familiar.
