There’s something special about hearing a favorite song brought to life in a refreshing way. That’s exactly what Swamp Music Players have done with their latest release “Run With Us”. Instead of simply covering a classic song, the Canadian music collective has reimagined it with a darker, more cinematic sound while keeping the heart of the original alive.
Based in Victoria, British Columbia, Swamp Music Players have been making music since around 2015. They describe themselves as a retro-futuristic music collective, blending swamp rocks, swamp blues, cosmic americana and classic rock influences into a sound that feels vintage and modern at the same time.
Their music has earned them spots on college radio charts in both Canada and France, and some of their songs have even appeared in feature films like Commando Ninja 2: Invasion America and Hellcat’s Revenge.
The band has become well known for their magical touch on classic songs. Over the years, they have released unique versions of tracks by Concrete Blonde, the Ramones and Psycho Charger. Each cover is choosen and completely transformed to fit the band’s signature swamp-inspired style. Their latest release continues that tradition.
“Run with Us” which was originally released by Lisa Lougheed became famous as the closing theme song for the popular canadian animated series The Racoons. For many canadians, especially those who grew up during the 1980s, the song is filled with childhood memories. It’s not just a television theme, it’s a piece of Canadian pop culture history.
Rather than copying the original, Swamp Music Players choose to give the song a fresh look. Dark synthesizers create a mysterious atmosphere from the beginning, while strong guitar riffs give the song a heavier rock feel. It’s a beautiful blend of 80s synth-pop, alternative rock, and a cinematic soundscape. It’s nostalgic yet excitingly new.
The production of this track is something worth talking about. Lead vocalist Hillary Beckett recorded her vocals in the living room of an old heritage home using a vintage stage microphone and an 8-track recorder. Instead of aiming for a perfectly polished studio sound, the band embraced the natural warmth of the room, giving her voice this rich, authentic character that perfectly fit the mood of the song.
The production progressed at Battle Chamber Music Studio in Detroit, where Steve Greene added his magic touch. The mysterious guitarist known only as The Swamp Wizard also travelled to Detroit to record the lead guitar parts. Staying true to his mysterious reputation, he remains completely anonymous, adding another layer of intrigue to the project.
Hillary Beckett is the heart of this performance. Having recorded nearly a dozen songs with Swamp Music Players, she has become one of the group’s defining voices. She also performs with projects including Andison Hills, Tight hair and Cooped Up Lyons proving just how versatile she is as a singer.
Producer, bassist and keyboardist Evert Peter also deserves some accolade and according to him, the inspiration for this release came from childhood memories shared by many Canadians. However, the band wasn’t trying to recreate those memories, rather they wanted to capture the excitement of the 90s music itself.
“Run with us” is not just another cover song. It is a carefully crafted tribute that respects the past while confidently creating something new. Swamp Music Players have proven to us that great music does not stay frozen in time and sometimes the best way to honor a classic is to let it grow into something different.
