I’m often in search of music that helps us escape reality, but the new track from Dead Water and the Seeds of Despair did something entirely different for me: it dragged me into a completely new one. Cody Carlyle and Travis Jordan have been creating music together for over 30 years but their latest project together feels like the culmination of everything they’ve ever learned.
The latest instrumental track doesn’t just play in your headphones; it physically alters the atmosphere of the room you’re in. They throw Americana, old-timey murder ballads, garage rock, dark country, punk grass and folk into a blender and what pours out under the moniker Dead Water and the Seed is entirely their own. The track feels less like a conventional one and more like a summoning-a masterful alignment of frequencies meant for the falling of the sky.
The track kicks off beautifully and you can hear the ambient, cozy hum of a crowd enjoying the show, mixed with the nostalgic crackle of a vinyl record. It feels safe and familiar but then the floor drops out.
Slowly, almost stealthily, instruments with a distinct ancient ethnic vibe begin to layer in and before you know it, Until You Burn Me transforms into a full on ritualistic experience. There’s a heavy gorgeous middle eastern influence woven throughout that makes you picture dancers under a desert sky. Listening to the track feels like an emotional rollercoaster. The high notes and deep bass create a strange mix of feeling safe and feeling scared all at the same time.
Cody and Travis made the perfect background music for a desert movie. There’s a constant chill hidden in the music that somehow dives into human emotions putting you in a trance where you feel curiosity.
The use of silence is impressive. They understand that quiet moments can be just as powerful as loud ones. They leave empty spaces in the music that make the air in the room feel heavy, pulling you deeper into the sound.
This is not just a musical track; it is a bridge that connects ancient musical traditions with modern styles. It’s a dangerous but beautiful journey that makes you think deeply about your own personal fears.
Dead Waters and the Seeds of Despair have created a truly powerful piece of art and i haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. Go give it a listen and i’m sure it would leave a spell on you too.
