There’s a very distinct kind of weight to music that comes from a deep, unstoppable need to create. For Rumour Den, the songwriting duo made up of singer and lyric writer AJ Gilmore and musician/guitarist Steve Simms, making music has always felt like a mix between a good gift and a heavy weight.
Their first album Melancholic Anonymous was recorded in 2001 but didn’t truly reflect the music the duo had in mind. They never promoted it as much and eventually stepped away from the project. Still, music remained something they just couldn’t leave behind.
After spending years away from the music scene, the pair felt a more creative spark late last year while working on older songs with a fresh music sound. That little spark grew into a huge fire which led to a huge wave of new songs and a future album with the fitting working title Relapse (planned for release late in 2026 or early 2027 recorded at Einstein studios in Antrim with famous local producer Frankie Mcclay.)
Rumour Den takes a new dimension with their latest release, “All In This Together” and while their earlier songs introduced them as a band known for thoughtful lyrics, this third single moves into a more direct and emotionally driven alternative rock sound.
Built around an anthem-like energy and the raw excitement of a live performance, the song shows a band that values honesty and emotions over polished perfection.
“All in This Together” steals your attention from the very first note with it’s powerful energy. The guitars embody a character hard to dismiss while the vocals are emotionally packed and the production does the finishing touch. The band allows the natural feel to remain, making the performance alive. Listening to the song feels like standing in the same room as the band while they perform it live.
Lyrically, the song explores a state of control that exposes the mechanics of authoritarianism. Writing from the perspective of a compliant citizen within a pervasive surveillance state, lyricist AJ Glimore detail-driven verses reveal a society governed by cold transaction, reporting a stranger yields fifty state credits, while informing on a neighbor for sharing blacklisted literature promises a career advancement.
The song’s chorus is built around the price of equity reframing it as an enforced mantra of absolute submission. The narrative reaches it’s grim conclusion when the narrator is ultimately betrayed by the very system they served, offering a powerful warning that authoritarian machinery invariably consumes everyone, leaving the victim in a cell where you can’t point fingers when they’re broken.
The idea for this song was inspired from real history about control obsessed governments specifically how people in East Germany watched each other and turned on their own friends. The song highlights how a scary world run by forced rules and fake good behavior.
One major reason All In This Together works so well is because it’s strong political message never takes attention away from the music itself. Steve Simm guitar playing creates the perfect backdrop for Gilmore’s storytelling. Every note strengthens the story being told.
In the end, All In This Together succeeds on every level. It’s an exciting alternative rock anthem filled with a raw energy, a deeply emotional musical performance and a powerful warning about control and the importance of protecting personal freedom.
As Rumour Den continues building momentum towards the release of Relapse, they show once more that meaningful rock music still has an important place in today’s scene. If their first two singles introduced listeners to their artistic vision, All In This Together proves that they are not afraid to push themselves further, tackle difficult subjects and create music that sends a message in the hearts of all that listen.
