The Hard Quartet Announces…….RIO SONG

“Rio’s Song” is a spirited track that comes with an equally dynamic music video. According to the band, the video is their homage to “street rock in the hot afternoon” and features scenes of “clowning around with lifer friends in downtown New York City.” Shot guerrilla-style by director Jared Sherbert on St Mark’s Place and in The International Bar on July 15, 2024, the video captures the raw, unfiltered energy of the city. It features a colorful cast of local New York City artists, musicians, activists, skaters, and icons who are close to the band, embodying the eclectic and inclusive spirit of the city’s vibrant creative community.

The Hard Quartet is more than just a collection of talented musicians; it’s a true collaboration where each member brings their unique voice and perspective to the project. Emmett Kelly, one of the band’s founding members, shared his thoughts on the importance of collaboration within the group. “Leave yourself behind and go into something where you’re actually listening to others and trying to come up with a solution to whatever kind of esoteric thing you are attempting to do in your life. You know what I mean?” Kelly explained. His words reflect the band’s approach to making music — it’s about coming together, listening, and creating something that’s greater than the sum of its parts.

Matt Sweeney echoed this sentiment, particularly highlighting the influence of drummer Jim White on the band’s sound. “The way Jim plays really affected the way I hear things,” Sweeney said. “He has this way of making everything sound good. All of a sudden, you really pay attention to everything else that’s going on because of what Jim is doing.” Sweeney’s appreciation for White’s drumming highlights the seamless interplay between the band members, a dynamic that defines the Hard Quartet’s music.

Jim White, known for his unique drumming style, described his creative process in a more abstract way. “There’s this thing where I’ll have a story in my head when I have an intention, and I can hear it in the drums,” he shared. “It doesn’t matter if I tell anyone — even the people I’m playing with. You don’t even have to be particularly conscious of it yourself. But if you have an intention, something happens to the sound. It’s really weird.” White’s approach adds a layer of depth and mysticism to the band’s music, emphasizing the importance of intention and emotion in their creative process

With the release of their self-titled debut album just around the corner, the Hard Quartet is poised to make a significant impact on the indie-rock scene. Their blend of talent, creativity, and collaborative spirit promises a fresh and compelling sound that fans are eager to hear. “Rio’s Song” and its accompanying video offer a taste of what’s to come, showcasing the band’s ability to blend influences and create something entirely their own.
