Sunflower Bean, the New York-based psych-sludge trio, has been steadily carving out a niche in the modern rock landscape. Their last full-length release, 2022’s Headful Of Sugar, delivered standout tracks like “I Don’t Have Control Sometimes,” “Roll The Dice,” and “Who Put You Up To This?”. Now, the band is back with a new EP titled Shake, marking an exciting chapter in their evolution.
What’s especially noteworthy about Shake is that it’s the band’s first entirely self-produced and self-recorded project. In an era where many artists rely on external producers and engineers to shape their sound, Sunflower Bean has taken complete creative control, returning to their DIY roots. This EP reflects the raw, unfiltered essence of the band, capturing the energy and spontaneity that fueled their early years.
In a statement about the new project, Sunflower Bean shared, “SHAKE was inspired by our first years as a DIY band, the spirit that birthed us and gave us the chance to have this enduring journey together. We wrote, recorded, engineered, and produced these songs so nothing was filtered through anyone else’s idea of us. We always felt like rock and roll was a feeling, not a sound. But sometimes there is no subverting it or explaining it. We’re now offering it exactly as it occurred to us.”
The EP’s title track, “Shake,” is now streaming and offers a glimpse into the band’s back-to-basics approach. The song, like the rest of the EP, is a reminder that rock and roll is as much about attitude and authenticity as it is about sound. Sunflower Bean’s decision to embrace a DIY ethos once again highlights their commitment to staying true to their artistic vision.
Shake features five tracks, each promising to deliver the raw energy and passion that fans have come to expect from Sunflower Bean:
- “Shake”
- “Lucky Number”
- “Teach Me To Be Bad”
- “Serial Killer”
- “Angelica”
