Isabel Maria finishes an exciting year with her new song Ghost, a fun and fascinating track. Released just in time for Halloween, Ghost explores social anxiety, awkward moments, and the feeling of embarrassing yourself in public. Inspired by the strange experience of “ghosting” someone—avoiding texting back because you’re too nervous—the song combines a playful and thoughtful mood.
Cocomyrrh: Isabel, thank you for taking the time to chat! It’s been such an exciting year for you, and now you have your latest release, Ghost. Could you tell us a bit about the song and how it came to be?
Isabel Maria: Thanks for having me! Ghost is one of my favorite things I’ve worked on this year. It’s about social anxiety, those awkward moments of embarrassing yourself in public, and of course, soup. But really, the heart of it is about the feeling of “ghosting” someone—when you’re too scared to text them back because you don’t know what to say. It sounds silly, but I think we’ve all been there, right?
I actually wrote the song last year in the early hours of a November morning when I couldn’t sleep. I was reflecting on those moments when you kind of vanish from someone’s life without explanation, and the awkwardness of it all. There’s a lot of humor in it too, though—so much of it is meant to be playful.
Cocomyrrh: I love that the song has both a fun and introspective side. You’ve mentioned before that Ghost has a lot of unexpected elements in it, with everything from theremin to trumpet. Can you talk a little more about how you approached the production?
Isabel Maria: Oh, absolutely! The production process was one of the most exciting parts for me. We recorded it at Blank Studios in Newcastle, and I’m so proud of how it turned out. I wanted to push myself musically and experiment with new sounds. The theremin, for example, brings this eerie, otherworldly vibe, and the trumpet adds this unexpected layer of warmth. I think both instruments mirror the quirky, offbeat nature of the song.
The goal was to make something that’s not only unique sonically but also reflects the complexity of the emotions behind the lyrics. It’s a bit all over the place, but in a way that feels intentional and authentic.
Cocomyrrh: It definitely sounds like you’ve created something really special. With Ghost being such a unique track, can you tell us how it fits into the broader direction of your music this year?
Isabel Maria: I think Ghost is a perfect snapshot of where I am musically in 2024. This year has been about exploring new sounds and embracing vulnerability in my songwriting. Ghost is one of the tracks that really highlights that shift for me. It’s a bit experimental but still accessible in its own way. I want to make music that feels genuine, where I’m not just singing about personal experiences but also reflecting the weirdness of life in general. I think Ghost captures that balance really well.
Cocomyrrh: That sounds like a blast! Before we wrap up, I have to ask—what’s next for you after Ghost? Any sneak peeks for what we can expect in 2025?
Isabel Maria: Well, Ghost is the final single for 2024, but I’m already working on new music for next year. I can’t give too much away yet, but I’m definitely continuing in the direction of blending the playful and the introspective. There will be more weird sounds, more personal stories, and I’m excited to keep experimenting with different styles and instruments. It’s going to be a fun year!
Cocomyrrh: We can’t wait to hear what’s next! Thanks again for chatting with us, Isabel. Ghost is sure to be a hit, and we’re excited for the spooky show and everything you’ve got in store.
Isabel Maria: Thank you so much! I’m really grateful for all the support. I can’t wait to share this next chapter with everyone!
